Popis:
Comparison
Comparison means we describe the difference between two things. There are several ways how to do it. The most used linguistic tool is the Comparative.
Comparative of adjectives
The comparative is the second grade of gradation of adjectives. It is formed according to the type of the adjective.
Type 1
The second grade is formed with the suffix -er. It is used with words of Germanic origin (usually one-syllable adjectives and two-syllable adjectives ending in -y).
Examples: tall - taller, short - shorter
happy - happier, ugly - uglier
Changes before the suffix:
a) in one-syllable adjectives with a short vowel and one final consonant you must double the final consonant: hot - hotter, big - bigger
b) in adjectives ending with a consonant and -y you must change the -y into -i, as you can see in: happy - happier, ugly - uglier
c) if the base form ends with -e, you add just -r: safe - safer
